We think all the time, but understanding thought is surprisingly elusive. Ask a few people what thoughts are, and you might get descriptions like "wispy things" or "sparklers fizzing with chaotic flashes but containing a central light source that is controllable." These poetic interpretations, though unscientific, highlight the enigmatic nature of thought. Even experts grapple with defining and understanding it.
The Nature of Thought
"The short answer is that no one really knows what thought is," says Tim Bayne, a philosopher at Monash University in Australia and author of *Thought: A Very Short Introduction*. Despite this uncertainty, it's useful to consider two aspects of thought: their content and their nature.
Kalina Christoff, who runs the Cognitive Neuroscience of Thought Laboratory at the University of British Columbia, defines thought in a way that encapsulates both these aspects. “Thought is a mental state, or series of mental states, that has some kind of content to it, with some personal attitudes towards the content – like an attitude of remembering or believing or imagining,” she says.
The Content of Thought
Thinking differs from perceiving or sensing. While all these processes involve holding something before one’s mind, thoughts are distinct because they are independent of any external stimulus. For example, you can think about a unicorn even though you have never seen one. This independence is what sets thoughts apart from simple perceptions.
How Thoughts Arise
Christoff identifies three streams that contribute to the emergence of thought:
1. Perceptual Stream: This includes sensory inputs from the external world. While thinking is independent of these inputs, they often provide the raw material for thoughts.
2. Conceptual Stream: This involves abstract concepts and knowledge stored in our memory. For instance, mathematical reasoning or philosophical pondering fall into this category.
3. Emotional Stream: Emotions can significantly shape our thoughts, providing a personal attitude towards the content of our thinking.
The Brain and Thought
Neuroimaging studies have attempted to map thought processes in the brain, yet the relationship between neural activity and the nature of thought remains complex and somewhat mysterious. The brain's networks are highly interconnected, with different regions contributing to various aspects of thought. For instance, the prefrontal cortex is crucial for complex decision-making and planning, while the hippocampus plays a key role in memory.
The Challenge of Pinning Down Thought
Even with advanced technology, pinning down the exact nature of thought remains challenging. Brain scans can show us where activity is occurring, but interpreting what this means in terms of subjective experience is not straightforward. For example, patterns of neural activity can correlate with certain types of thinking, such as recalling a memory or solving a problem, but they don't reveal the actual content of the thoughts.
Thoughts are an integral part of our daily lives, yet their true nature is still shrouded in mystery. While we can describe different kinds of thoughts and how they arise, the intricate relationship between neural activity and the essence of our thoughts is not fully understood. As research continues, we may get closer to understanding this profound aspect of human cognition, but for now, thoughts remain one of the most fascinating and elusive phenomena of the mind.
