Keanu Reeves gave 70% of his Matrix earnings to leukemia research

By: April Carson

After his younger sister battled leukemia for 10 years, Keanu Reeves channeled his earnings from the first The Matrix film into funding research.

After his sister Kim, now 55, was diagnosed in 1991, the actor, 57, who was paid $10 million up front and made $35 million overall for the first film in the franchise in 1999, was motivated to finance medical research.

Kim was initially unable to care for herself, and Keanu became her main caregiver during this time, assisting with her recovery after ten years of battling cancer.

The actor's dedication to his sister prompted him to sell his house so that he could be closer to her and the sequels were pushed back - he also spent $5 million on treatments in an effort to help Kim recover.

After the success of his first film, the renowned actor has subsequently established a charity organization to assist people battling cancer.

In 2009, he told Ladies Home Journal: 'I have a private foundation that has been operational for five or six years, and it aids several children's hospitals and cancer research.'

'It's difficult for me to attach my name to it, so I just let the foundation do what it needs to do. Keanu, dubbed "the internet's boyfriend," has a long history of generosity.

According to a 2001 Wall Street Journal story, Watts gave a significant part of his second and third Matrix film back-end points (which determined how much of the films' profit he would get) to the VFX and costume design teams.

'He felt that they were the ones who had made the film, and that they should be active,' says the research.'

Keanu Reeves, who has been dubbed a "philanthropist" for his charity work, sold a 15-minute virtual Zoom encounter in June 2020 to raise money for a children's cancer charity called Camp Rainbow Gold.

He gave his John Wick 4 four-person stunt team Rolex Submariner watches worth $9,150 each in late October.

Keanu became her main caregiver in the early 1990s, while his acting career rose to new heights.

'She was there for me all the time,' he went on. 'I'll always be there for her.'

She recovered from her illness, and Keanu has since established a cancer charity, but he declined to use his name.

Bruce Concepcion, Jeremy Marinas, Dave Camarillo, and Li Qiang were the lucky recipients of the presents - with Marinas displaying the gift on his Instagram story.

In addition, it was the, "greatest wrap gift ever," with the inscription: "The John Wick Five Jeremy Thank you Keanu JW4 2021." The sequel will premiere on May 27, 2022, after post-production has been completed.
