Immortal Hydras and Contagious Cancer: The Mysteries of Transmissible Tumors

Updated: 4 days ago

In the intricate and mysterious world of biology, we continue to uncover astonishing phenomena that challenge our understanding of life. One such discovery involves the jellyfish-like creature known as the hydra, which, under certain conditions, can develop a type of tumor that is contagious, passing the cancerous cells to its clone offspring. This finding, published in a groundbreaking 2024 study, not only unravels the process behind this bizarre occurrence but also sheds light on the mechanisms of transmissible cancer, which remains a rare but devastating phenomenon across species.

The Bizarre World of Hydras: Immortal, But Not Invincible

Hydras are small, freshwater organisms that are renowned for their regenerative abilities, which allow them to theoretically live indefinitely. However, this biological quirk does not make them immune to disease. In fact, researchers have found that when hydras are overfed, they can develop tumors, a clear sign that even these "immortal" creatures face the risks that come with multicellularity. The most shocking revelation is that these tumors can be passed on to their clone offspring, making this a form of transmissible cancer—a rarity in nature.

According to Sophie Tissot, an evolutionary ecologist at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), this discovery provides a unique window into how contagious cancers could evolve in nature. “We typically think of cancer as something that affects individuals," Tissot explains, "but transmissible cancers are a different beast altogether. They evolve in ways that allow them to spread from one host to another, almost like an infectious disease."

Transmissible Cancers: A Rare but Frightening Phenomenon

While cancer is a known risk for all multicellular organisms, transmissible forms are exceptionally rare. Some of the most well-known examples include two types of cancer that affect the Tasmanian devil, the only known instances of contagious cancer in mammals. These cancers, which cause facial tumors, have had a catastrophic impact on the Tasmanian devil population, leading to significant conservation efforts. Another transmissible cancer affects dogs—Canine Transmissible Venereal Tumor (CTVT)—which can be spread during mating. Additionally, 11 cases of transmissible cancers have been observed in bivalves like clams and mussels.

However, these cases are exceptions rather than the rule. The study of hydras offers researchers a new, simpler model to trace the origins of contagious cancer, as hydras are relatively easy to study in a controlled laboratory setting. Tissot and her team are particularly interested in how environmental factors, such as overfeeding, can trigger the development of tumors in hydras, and what allows these tumors to become transmissible between organisms.

What Hydras Can Teach Us About Cancer

Hydras reproduce asexually by budding, meaning that their offspring are essentially clones. In the new study, researchers found that hydras could pass tumor cells to their offspring during the budding process, effectively transmitting the cancerous cells. This form of transmission, while specific to hydras, opens up new questions about the evolution of contagious cancers in other organisms, especially those that reproduce clonally or have similar biological traits.

“By studying how transmissible cancers arise in hydras, we hope to learn more about how these cancers might evolve in other species, including mammals,” says Tissot. This research is particularly important as scientists seek to understand the potential risk of contagious cancers evolving in other animals—and, possibly, in humans.

While transmissible cancers in humans are extremely unlikely, understanding how these rare forms of cancer emerge in other species is crucial for both preventing and treating them. In the case of the Tasmanian devil, efforts are ongoing to find ways to curb the spread of their facial tumor disease. The insights gleaned from hydras could contribute to such efforts, helping researchers develop better strategies to protect vulnerable species from similar threats.

Why This Matters: A Broader Understanding of Cancer

Cancer is an inevitable risk for all multicellular life forms, but the study of transmissible cancers in hydras offers a fresh perspective on this deadly disease. By understanding how environmental triggers, like overfeeding, can lead to cancer development and how these cancers can become transmissible, we gain valuable knowledge about the broader mechanisms of cancer evolution.

This knowledge could not only help prevent contagious cancers in other species but also improve our understanding of how cancer develops and spreads within individual organisms. As Tissot and her team continue their research, the peculiar world of hydras may provide key answers to some of the most pressing questions in cancer biology.

Hydras, with their regenerative abilities and bizarre capacity for developing contagious tumors, offer an unprecedented opportunity to study the evolution of transmissible cancers. The insights from this research not only highlight the vulnerability of seemingly immortal creatures like hydras but also provide a valuable model for understanding the mechanisms behind transmissible cancers in other species.

By delving into the world of hydras, we may eventually unlock new methods for preventing and treating transmissible cancers, protecting species like the Tasmanian devil from extinction, and advancing our understanding of cancer in all forms of life.
