Rolls-Royce and Hyundai have formed a new collaboration to develop all-electric engines and hydrogen fuel cell technologies for airplanes. The two parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding containing five major items, but we'll get to that later. First, we need to make one point clear.
You might be shocked to learn that Rolls-Royce is in the aircraft business, but it's crucial to remember that the automobile firm with the same name and aircraft branch are two separate divisions. Rolls-Royce Holdings is a multinational aerospace and defense corporation that currently operates as the world's second largest manufacturer of airplane engines, as well as a number of other fields.
In 2014, the company announced it would be teaming up with Hyundai to develop a hydrogen fuel propulsion system for small passenger aircraft. The move was seen as rather strange at the time, considering that Hyundai has no experience in aviation whatsoever.
Rolls-Royce cooperating with Hyundai again sees the South Korean automaker as an expert in hydrogen technologies that can be industrialized on a large scale.Hyundai is expected to lend a hand with the introduction of new power and propulsion systems for its British partners, while the collaboration will also create new power systems for Hyundai's Advanced Air Mobility Division. The end result should be seen in 2025, when a fuel-cell electric aircraft will be presented as a joint project.
“We're excited to work with Hyundai Motor Group, which gives us an excellent opportunity to combine and build on the strengths of each company's aerospace and automotive industries,” Rob Watson from Rolls-Royce said. "This collaboration allows us to explore the commercial potential of Advanced Air Mobility and take steps towards becoming leaders in this exciting new market."
The project will be based on Rolls-Royce's already existing knowledge in the field of hydrogen propulsion for vehicles. The company has been working on such a system for over 10 years now, and has even tested it in a number of real-world scenarios.
Hyundai, on the other hand, is no stranger to electric and alternative fuel propulsion systems, thanks to its experience in building hybrid and electric cars.
The first fully electric model from Rolls-Royce, the carmaker, is expected to go on sale late next year. Meanwhile, its aircraft division is developing the world's quickest electric airplane, which should be capable of flying at speeds of up to 300 miles per hour (480 kilometers per hour). The British firm also announced a plan to reach net zero carbon emissions by mid-decade for all products made by the company.
The new hydrogen fuel propulsion system being developed by Hyundai and Rolls-Royce would be used for air taxis, which are small aircraft designed to carry a limited number of passengers over short distances. The system would be significantly lighter than current battery-powered systems and could potentially offer a much longer range.
"This is another significant step forward in our ambition to develop a zero-emissions aviation powertrain," said Manfred Radius, president of Rolls-Royce's electrical business. "It also underlines our commitment to working with the very best companies globally as we transform our business."
Hyundai has been working on developing fuel cell technology for many years, and it is already being used in some of its vehicles sold in South Korea. The company has also been working on developing hydrogen-powered drones.
