Assuming you'll need about $1 million to cover your basic retirement expenses , you'll need to save up around $350,000 to generate $35,000 in annual interest income. To generate $40,000 in annual interest income, you'll need to save up around $420,000. And to generate $50,000 in annual interest income, you'll need to save up around $500,000.
To calculate how much (in savings) you'll need in retirement to produce a desired level of annual interest income, use this formula: 1 divided by (interest rate/100 x desired annual interest income).
One of the most common worries about life after leaving your job is whether or not your money will outlive you. Fortunately, if you invest your money wisely, you can create a steady stream of income that will support you in retirement. And, depending on how much money you have saved up, this stream of income can be quite sizable.
You can figure out how much money you'll need to invest once you've decided on the amount you'll require each year in retirement. For example, to produce an annual income of $35,000 in retirement, you'll need to invest around $233,000. If your goal is to generate $40,000 per year, you'll need to save about $272,000. And if generating $50,000 each year is your aim, you'll need to set aside about $311,000.
Keep in mind that these figures are approximate, and the amount you'll need to save will also depend on the rate of return you achieve on your investments. However, this gives you a good idea of the ballpark you need to be aiming for.
When it comes to saving for retirement, time is your biggest ally. The sooner you start, the more money you'll have in the end. So if you're not quite there yet, don't worry – there's still time to make up for lost ground. Just remember to start small and gradually increase your contributions as your budget allows.
