HARVARD SCIENTIST SUGGESTS THAT OUR UNIVERSE WAS CREATED IN A LABORATORY

By: April Carson

According to a Harvard scientist, the universe was formed in a laboratory by a higher "class" of lifeform. The scientist, who participates in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute, claims that life on Earth did not evolve but was "seeded" by aliens.

According to Avi Loeb, the universe could have been produced in a lab by an "advanced technological civilization." If true, he claimed that the story's origins would bring together both religious and secular concepts of creator with quantum gravity.

The Harvard scientist goes on to give examples of religious texts that appear, in his opinion, to describe things which could be explained through quantum gravity and big-bang theories. He then says that the "prophecies" in these books are proven correct by science, but he does not offer any sources for this.

“Because our universe has a flat geometry with zero net energy, an advanced civilization might have developed a technology that created a new universe out of nothing via quantum tunneling,” Loeb later added. “The point of this paper is not to prove that God exists, only that he might."

Class A Civilization

The civilization classification system is one of the more intriguing concepts presented in a paper full of them. Humans, according to Loeb, are classified as a low-level technological society, with a rank of C (or a species that relies on its host star). A type I civilization is what you are likely to see in most modern science fiction films -- a species that harvests energy directly from its star. A Class II civilization has mastered space travel, venturing throughout the galaxy and harnessing stellar energy on faraway planets, while a Class III civilization exists outside of its solar system and draws power directly from its home galaxy. Finally, a Class IV civilization has discovered the secrets of a Big Rip, and has taken on a God-like status in its society by controlling all matter and energy within its entire universe.

We'd be class B if and when our technology reaches the point where we can generate our own baby universes in a laboratory (like our theoretical creators). We'd be class A if we were capable of generating our own baby universes in a lab.

Of course, there are several things standing in our way — the most pressing being our inability to create a "sufficient density of dark energy within a limited region," according to Loeb. However, if and when we do ever reach that point, we'll be able to join our theoretical creators in class A! The next question is how long it's going to take for us to get there. And the answer depends on whom you ask.

In any case, the idea is compelling, humbling, and a little bit frightening. If Loeb's previous claims turn out to be true, we may not be the only ones attempting to achieve class A status. Loeb believes that there may be other universes with intelligent life, and there's a possibility they're already trying to communicate with us. In fact, Loeb even points out that we may be receiving such communications right now and we just don't know it.
