In an interview with the Associated Press, Denzel Washington recalls his encounter with Will Smith on Oscar night, as well as what occurred after Smith smacked Chris Rock on stage.
On Saturday, Washington attended and addressed Bishop T.D. Jakes' leadership summit in Dallas, Texas. During his two-hour talk about faith and his successful acting career, Washington was asked about the infamous slap and what came next.
"There's a saying: If the devil ignores you, then you know you're doing something wrong," said Washington in a video of their exchange published on Jakes' verified Twitter account.
Washington continued: "I was at the Oscars. I'm sitting there and I hear somebody go 'Whap!'" The actor said he turned around to see Smith smacking Rock on stage. Washington said he initially thought it was all part of the show.
"Will is a good friend of mine. He's a great guy," Washington said of the actor. "But I'm thinking, 'Man, if that was me up there, I would have just ducked!'"
Will Smith walked to the stage at the Academy Awards and slapped Chris Rock, who was giving the presentation at the time, after he made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head.
Smith won his first Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature soon after the occurrence, and he expressed remorse for the previous act. Smith said in his acceptance speech, "Before I won, another nominee, Washington, gave me some advice: 'At your best time be wary,' the devil comes for you at that point.
Washington attended a leadership summit put on by Bishop T.D. Jakes over the weekend, where he was asked about his career, religious beliefs, and the incident.
During Saturday's discussion, Washington said he and Tyler Perry had prayed with Smith after the occurrence.
"It was a tough moment," he continued. "But what I loved about it was how he handled it afterwards."
"Fortunately, there were others with me, not just I, but others in the gap," Washington explained to Jakes. "Tyler Perry hurried straight over here with me."
"Who are we to judge?" inquired Washington. "I'm not familiar with all of the details, but I do know that prayer was the only answer."
After accepting his first ever Academy Award, Will Smith apologized in a public statement. In a recent Instagram post, he wrote that "violence in all of its forms is poisonous" and that while "jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada's medical condition was too much."
Since then he has resigned from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, who has initiated a "formal investigation" into the matter.
Chris Rock launched his "Ego Death" comedy tour days after the scene, and shut down chants from the crowd attacking Will, revealing that he was "still processing what happened."
