Equifax's data breach happened five years ago, affecting about 3.9 million Hoosiers. It is one of the largest data breaches in history, compromising consumers' personal information including social security numbers.
If you were one of the millions of people affected by the Equifax data breach, you may be eligible for a cash settlement. The Federal Trade Commission is now accepting claims for the settlement, which could net you up to $125 — or more, if you have documented losses.
Equifax paid $19.5 million to the state as compensation for its actions.
Indiana's Attorney General Todd Rokita noted that Indiana is one of the few states that refunded money to its people.
"This is the people's money. This is your money that we're talking about," Rokita said. "It's not the government's money. It's not my money. It's the people's money and I'm glad Indiana was able to get it back to them."
"We took it, and by doing it, we were able to get the majority of that $19.5 million back to them (citizens), but there's still a bit more work to do," Rokita added.
Identity theft has become a major problem in recent years, with more and more people falling victim to it. This is often because their personal information has been stolen in a data breach.
As a result, many states have started offering settlements to those who have been affected by data breaches. These settlements usually come in the form of cash, but some states are now offering them as prepaid debit cards.
This is a good move by the states, as it allows those who have been affected by data breaches to get their money back quickly and easily. It also helps to protect their personal information.
Payments began in 2021, but not everyone took advantage of the option to receive their bitcoin or cash a cheque.
The money is now being sent as a prepaid Mastercard debit card.
The card can be used anywhere that Mastercard is accepted, and it can be used to withdraw cash from ATMs.
"There's about 22,000 people that didn't cash their checks the first time around. So there's approximately $1.7 million left out there," Rokita added.
If you didn't click the now-defunct digital payment or toss the check, keep an eye on your mail for the card.
